'Tis the Season

On a rare trip back to Montclair for Christmas Eve, our friend Dan Thompson gets a chance to reminisce about the Christmas of 1973, a chance to think about rocks so big that even God can't lift them, and an unexpected surprise.

If you haven't read one of Dan's stories yet, then 'tis the season to start, and a great story to start with. As usual, it's only 99¢!

It's About Time

While thinking about his friends' problems with getting a little free time with a toddler around the house, our friend Dan Thompson starts reminiscing about the prank he used to always pull on his grandmother whenever he visited her.

And then he decided that he needed to pay a "well-timed" visit to the local Apple Store.

If you haven't read one of Dan's stories yet, then it's about time you did. And as usual, it's only 99¢!

A Little Unwanted Attention

OK, Dan's back to being the center of attention again. Actually, he's the center of a little too much attention. A good-looking woman that he works with at the library has started flirting with him.

So what's not to like about that?

How about the fact that she's married?

But despite Dan's issues, you don't have to worry about getting your hands on Bobbi McPhee. And she's only 99¢!

Run, Dan, Run!

$2.99 for a pair of sneakers? Yeah, that was cheap even for 1972. And even worse, the label on the back said Fruit of the Loom. But our good friend Dan Thompson was proud of his cheap sneakers; they did just what he needed them to do, and he didn't need a pair of fancy $10.00 Converses for that.

But I'm not gonna tell you the whole story right here and now, I want you to go to Amazon or B&N and download it for 99¢…

Which is a whole lot less than Dan paid for his sneakers.

It's Not Always About Him...

Believe it or not, this story isn't about Dan Thompson. Oh he's the narrator, as usual, but this one really isn't about him; it's about his friends Michael and Leah. It's about an incredible amount of good luck, and a tiny bit of bad luck; and I think it's my favorite of all the stories I've written so far.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed being able to tell it.

Don't Look Back

I don't know about you, but as a kid growing up in North Jersey, I was always taught that if you think someone's following you on a deserted street, you shouldn't look back, but should instead walk as quickly as possible to the first safe place you can find. Seems our friend Dan Thompson, who also grew up in North Jersey, learned the same thing. What happens when he thinks he's being followed on his way to work?

You Talk Too Much...

It's time for the annual reunion at the Camillus Academy, and students come back not only to see their old friends, but their old teachers. Our friend Dan Thompson is the teacher and Christine Lehmann is the student who, more than 10 years ago, didn't know when to shut up; telling Dan, and her classmates, more than they really wanted to know.

Has time changed her?

Do You Have A Date?

As many of you probably already know, our friend Dan managed to get elected as senior class president at Montclair High. But along with all the other responsibilities of the job that he can easily handle, comes one more that will prove to be a bit of a challenge to him…getting a date to the prom that's not either his sister or his cousin.

And then there's always the unexpected...

Sing Along with Dan

Well, Dan's not leading the sing-along, but he's definitely a part of it, as are all of his classmates in Mr Dante's 8th grade homeroom at the Bradford School. Find out what happens when they get to the theater in Greenwich Village to see The Drunkard, and about Barry, the guy on the piano who is reading The Godfather between songs.

Oh…and don't laugh when you have to sing a song with the word "bosom" in it, or you'll catch it from Mrs Roberts.

I See Stupid People

OK, most of the paperwork is out of the way, although there is that business about a piece of music I promised I'd write for a former student to play at her violin recital. Anyway, this month we move from our friend Dan Thompson being a lovesick freshman at the university to 15 or 16 years later, when he's working as a full-time staff member for Computing Services, and has to deal with a very persistent, but also very annoying, student in The Idiot (with apologies to Dostoyesky).

Will Dan get the last word? There's only one way to find out!

A Lot of Paperwork

Really. This is the month of financial aid forms, tax forms, and a bunch of other paperwork I need to get out of the way before I put another story up. I'm trying to decide whether to put up one I've already got "in the can" or to finish one that's in process.

But give me a week, and I'll have one for you.

Darn…too bad I didn't have one for St Patrick's Day! Maybe I'll plan that for next year.

Let's Hear it for Love!

Yes, it's February, and a young person's fancy turns to thoughts of love. Well, actually, so do the fancies of old people, but we're talking about our friend Dan Thompson here, who as an 18-year-old college freshman, I think we can definitely consider to be a young person; and in this month's story, Lunch with Laurie, he's definitely thinking of love.

So let's hear it for love, both the requited and the unrequited kinds.

Getting with "The Program"

It's a new month, and even a new year. This means it's time for a new story. And yes, for all of his fans, it's another one about Dan Thompson.

The Program is a story of how Dan finds sympathy and learns an important lesson from a very unexpected source as he deals with the fact that a friend of his is dying. My wife said that she cried at the end. I hope that's a good thing.

Once again, it's only 99c, and for that amount of money, you could do a lot worse.
